The letter of December 13, 1943

On December 11, the deputy commandant of the camp ordered to announce to the block members of the Polish blocks that there was a need for Polish women, only political prisoners, for the brothel in Mauthausen. Although there are some prostitutes among Polish prisoners – they wear a red triangle like us – only one volunteered (she was beaten up by Polish women so that she would stop looking for that type of job once and for all).
For some time now, bonuses in several dozen pfennigs have been introduced in the camp’s factories where prisoners work. The receipt of the reward for work above a norm has to be confirmed each time with the prisoner’s signature. Some Polish women refused to accept the bonuses since they considered it a form of forced labour – a significant issue because the camp authorities applied punishments to those who resisted. For example, as a punishment, prisoners are transferred to heavier jobs. Unfortunately, there is no unanimity among Polish women on this matter; some believe that it is better to sign in than to lose an easy job where you can help others. We will not sign in any case. Besides, they will not propose to us because they will be afraid of trouble and noise.
After all, prisoners from the Lublin transport have a negative opinion of the camp authorities.
Recently some Jewish women have been brought to the camp and six children ( the youngest is two and a half years old ). These children stand just like us on roll-calls that last two hours.
