Ravensbrück Everything is so ugly. Walls, blocks and wire coils And we are all ugly, Dressed in prison clothes. The bedding patterns are ugly, on mattresses made of straws, And greenery covered with dust Pretending to be lawns. Only the sky is beautiful, From east to west, At which endlessly, we look with admiration every day. Only the clouds are beautiful, Stars and golden moon And the ribbon of flowing birds By the longing trail. Ravensbrück, 1941
Credo If this is the price of your freedom, O Poland! My beloved motherland, that I should be beaten, Abused and left in an undignified plight To the grace of the ruthless Teutonic Knights, And, if what is dear in my life, What I am longing for, dead to the world, I am sure, misses me too, my child, that is why for my harm, I am pleading to you, O God! of mine. If the freedom of my country to be the price! Poland, my beaten motherland now, And, if at last, I am going to die, let me, O God! of mine, fall in elation and pride. Ravensbrück, 1941
