Smietnik (Garbage) by Maria Hiszpańska Neumann

On a homely melody

The night is standing; the sleep is fleeing,
The lilacs' fragrance is so appealing.

Yonder the long seventh river afar,
Yonder the seventh one, you are.

The time is passing over the meadows.
The night so scares me with lurking shadows.

Behind barbed wires, behind the bars
It is my frozen, sad and short life.

From your place to mine, uncountable miles,
It is a long, dangerous trail, which no bird will fly.

From my place to yours, the distance seems close,
When my heart is thrashing, like the hammer beats yours.

Over the forest, mists quietly drift.
Yonder the seventh, the seventh river, you live.

I will give you my sad heart, all heavy dreams,
All my anxieties, pain and tears.
