Jadwiga Krasicka

Jadwiga Krasicka, Ph.D. in philology, was a teacher and headmaster of the Lodz high school. Gestapo arrested her in Warsaw for her activity in the Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ). She stayed in Pawiak prison until the end of July 1944, then in Ravesbruck Concentration Camp, where she died in the camp hospital after contracting typhus while caring for the sick.

The prisoners speak.

Fragment.

Silent grave won't wrap us in green sod,
Nor will be there, wind in the pines above.
Yellow sand won't cover our tired eyes.
Tombstones' voices with inscriptions tell nothing about us.
From broken and loving hearts, no rose bush will sprout,
And the roots of lofty forest trees won't tuck us up.
